Consumer Watch: The Brands of Boyfriend

3QAluminum-Ice-BucketWhen it comes to boyfriends or potential boyfriends there are “types” and I have certainly had my fair share of them.  I have zero qualifications on giving advice on love or anything that resembles love and/or relationships.  My degree is in business and global economy and my qualifications are roughly 17 years of failed relationships.  So, keep reading if you dare.

Now, I’m not talking about “types” that are relegated to physical categorization like "the muscle head” or the “the academic”.  Those designations are based more on physicality and interests, although for the sake of transparency, any man who has jewels on the ass pockets of his jeans is not welcome in my universe.  No, I’m talking about the brand that comes with how they stack up as a potential partner and how that evolves over time.

There are three buckets of types I subscribe to, mostly because I like simplicity and in my experience of dating for the last 17 years or so, I’ve learned to recognize the differences and how I’ve effectively been doggy paddling in the dating cesspool of life.

I give you my three Boyfriend Brand Buckets: The Bargain, the Faux Beau, and the Real Deal.

The ironic twist!  Of course there is a ironic twist.  Any one man can be any of these brands, it depends on a variety of factors, their level of interest, their maturity level, their goals, their geography, their options, their emotional state, etc.  There are about a million more variables and factors, but you get my drift.  So, while some men suck inherently, I don’t think that’s why all relationships fail.  In my experience, most of us hang out in between Bargain and Faux for years until (or if) we find the Real Deal.

Dating Service… It’s Over…

As reported earlier this week, I’m in a relationship.  I hesitate using the word “boyfriend” because I’m 30, and NOT 12 and “manfriend” isn’t a socially accepted phrase (as I type, Microsoft has red squiggle underline for “manfriend” because it doesn’t recognize it as an actual word), and all other labels are awkward.  So, he’s just….uh… my guy.  Regardless, that isn’t the subject of my post today.  I have unfinished business to tend to.

Carrie's Corner for Horrifyingly Bad Dating Advice: YOUR Questions Answered

I love the people who read my blog, I really do.  My original post on dating advice has been my most popular so far.  I don't know if I should be flattered or if it should serve as a message to me and a warning to others.

I don't know how, or why anyone saw any merit in my last post offering dating advice, but I did get a whole host of responses which I answered directly.   I'd like to share those with you.  I've shortened the names to protect the innocent... and the sad....except for you "Big Tony."  I gave additional details on you.

Dear Carrie,
I read your blog post and I think you may be onto something.  Keep up the good work.  One question, do you think it's okay to go home with a guy on the first date?
Sincerely,
A.W.

Dear A.W.
I have to tell you that this one hinges entirely on the home in question.  Lake house in a gated community - Yes.  Crack House - No.

Carrie's Corner for Horrifyingly Bad Dating Advice

I recently got this email:

Dear Carrie,
I am recently divorced as well and single.  I'm really unhappy and thought you might have some advice for me?

First of all, holy crap.  I am probably the worst person on the planet to be offering advice on this front.  I deeply caution you to not take a word of this to heart. I don't know why YOU are single.  I am because the men I am attracted to tend to be morons, emotionally stunted mama's boys, or otherwise broken in some capacity.  It's a gift that I find them so readily and with such a diverse subset of reasons to suck.

Guys, don't be offended if we've ever dated and you're reading this.  This post isn't about you.  (This post is totally about you.)
